Math 1 & Math 2

If you have a student heading into high school in Bend, you may have looked at their course schedule and gotten confused. There’s no Algebra 1. There’s no Geometry. Instead there’s something called Math 1, followed by Math 2, followed by a choice you’ve never had to make before.

You’re not missing something. Bend-La Pine genuinely does not use the traditional Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 sequence that most of us grew up with. The district uses what it calls a 2+1 pathway, and if your family moved here from another state or another Oregon district, the difference is real.

I started Tutor Portland years ago and have spent a lot of time helping families decode their district’s math curriculum. Now that our tutors are working with students across Central Oregon, the questions we hear most often in August are about this exact thing. So let’s walk through it.

Why Bend-La Pine Math Looks Different

The change traces back to a statewide decision. Oregon revised its mathematics standards in 2021, and those revisions were designed to create a two-credit core math experience for every student, followed by a third credit chosen to match the student’s plans after high school.

The Reasoning Behind the Shift

The traditional algebra-geometry-algebra sequence was built for a different era. It assumed that the main destination for high school math was calculus, and that every student should walk the same road to get there.

Oregon educators argued that this no longer reflects how math gets used. Data science, statistics, computer science, and mathematical modeling have become central to a huge range of careers. A student headed toward nursing, business, or environmental science needs different mathematical tools than one headed toward mechanical engineering. The 2+1 structure tries to give everyone a shared foundation and then let them specialize.

What This Means for Parents

Whether you agree with the philosophy or not, the practical reality matters more. Your student will take two required core courses and then choose a third. That third choice has real consequences for college applications and for what doors stay open. As a result, understanding the structure early is worth your time.

How Bend-La Pine Math Works: The 2+1 Pathway

Here’s the structure in plain terms. Two required core credits, then one credit selected from three possible pathways.

The Core Content

Across Math 1 and Math 2 combined, the content breaks down to roughly one credit of algebra, half a credit of geometry, and half a credit of data science and statistics. That last piece is the genuinely new part. Data and statistics used to be an elective for most students. Now they’re baked into the required core.

What Math 1 Covers

Math 1 is essentially the algebra course. Students work on algebraic tools and fluency, mathematical modeling, and linear reasoning including slope, intercepts, and converting between forms of linear equations.

From there they move into quadratic functions, exponential functions, and systems of equations and inequalities. The course closes out with non-linear functions and the formal definition of functions using proper notation. If you remember Algebra 1, most of this will look familiar, though the pacing is quicker in places.

What Math 2 Covers

Math 2 blends geometry with data reasoning, which is where it diverges most sharply from what parents expect. Students cover geometric formulas, geometric properties, and constructing and communicating geometric arguments. They also work through area, surface area, and volume, right triangle geometry, and similarity, congruence, scale factors, and transformations.

Then the course pivots. The final units cover probability and data. So a student who spent the fall doing proofs and triangles finds themselves doing statistics in the spring. That transition catches some students off guard, and it’s worth preparing them for it.

The Third Credit: Three Pathways

This is the decision that matters most. Bend-La Pine offers three general paths for the third credit, and each high school fills them out slightly differently.

The pathway to calculus runs through Advanced Algebra, AP Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. This is the route for students headed toward engineering, physics, computer science, or anything with a heavy quantitative load in college.

The pathway to data science includes Exploring Data Science and AP Statistics. This route fits students headed toward business, health sciences, social sciences, or any field where interpreting data matters more than computing derivatives.

The pathway to quantitative mathematics includes Math and Society and Applied Mathematics. These courses focus on practical mathematical reasoning and prepare students for college-level math at the 100 level.

A Note on Graduation Requirements

The Bend-La Pine Academic Diploma, which is the default, requires three math credits at Math 1 or higher. That means the 2+1 structure gets your student to the minimum. However, the Honors Diploma requires four math credits, and most competitive four-year colleges want to see four years of math on a transcript. If your student is aiming higher than the baseline, plan for a fourth course.

The Middle School Foundation

High school math builds on what happens in sixth through eighth grade, and Bend-La Pine’s middle school program has its own distinct approach.

The Desmos Curriculum

Bend-La Pine middle school teachers use the Desmos Math Curriculum, which combines interactive online work with student notebooks for notes and practice. If your student’s math homework involves a screen more than you expected, this is why.

The middle school focus is heavily on proportional reasoning. Students work with ratios, rates, percentages, proportions, integers, scaling, transformations, linear relationships, functions, data literacy, and probability. The district describes the goal as preparing students to succeed in high school math, and the emphasis on proportions and linear thinking is deliberate groundwork for Math 1.

How the Teaching Approach Has Changed

The instructional materials Bend-La Pine uses for core high school math come from Math Medic, and the teaching model behind them explains a lot about why homework looks unfamiliar.

Experience First, Formalize Later

Math Medic uses a model called EFFL, which stands for Experience First, Formalize Later. Students collaborate to explore a concept and construct their own understanding before the teacher introduces formal definitions and formulas.

This inverts how most of us learned. We got the formula, then practiced it. Your student explores the idea, then gets the formula. Because of that, a homework assignment might look like an open-ended investigation rather than thirty practice problems.

What This Means at Home

If your student asks for help and you jump straight to the formula, you may accidentally short-circuit the lesson. The course is designed to build intuition before notation. Therefore, a better move is to ask what they explored in class and work from there.

This approach can produce deeper understanding over time. It also widens the gap between what parents remember and what students are doing, which is frustrating for everyone.

Where Students Struggle in Bend-La Pine Math

Our tutors see a few consistent trouble spots in Central Oregon students. Knowing them in advance helps.

The Math 1 Compression

Math 1 covers a lot of algebra in one year. Students who arrive without solid fraction skills, comfort with negative numbers, or fluency in solving multi-step equations fall behind quickly. The course does not slow down to rebuild middle school foundations.

The Math 2 Pivot

The shift from geometric proofs to probability and data inside a single course is a real cognitive gear change. Students who finally got comfortable with geometry sometimes stumble when the material turns statistical. Watch for a grade dip in the second half of Math 2.

The Third-Credit Decision

This one is less about math skill and more about planning. Students sometimes choose the easiest available third credit without understanding how that choice affects college applications. A student who takes Math and Society and then applies to an engineering program has a problem. Because each high school offers a slightly different course menu, the counselor conversation matters.

How to Support Your Student in Bend-La Pine Math

You don’t need to remember any of this material to help. A few things make a real difference.

Watch the Transitions

The riskiest moments are the handoffs. Eighth grade into Math 1. Math 1 into Math 2. Math 2 into the third credit. If your student struggled at the end of one course, don’t assume the next will go smoothly. Use the summer to shore up weak areas before the new course starts.

Use Free Tools Well

Khan Academy covers every topic in the Bend-La Pine core sequence and lets students target specific gaps. Duolingo Math works well for building daily fluency in short sessions, especially for middle schoolers still firming up proportional reasoning. Both are free and both reward consistency over intensity.

Talk to the Counselor Early

Course selection for the third credit happens in late winter, and the options vary by school. Start that conversation in January rather than March. Bring your student’s grades and their post-high-school interests, and ask directly which pathway aligns with their plans.

When to Bring in Help

If your student is falling behind in Math 1 or Math 2, acting early makes a significant difference. Small gaps take a few sessions to close. Accumulated gaps across a full semester take months.
