Local context matters here, because biology recently moved in the sequence and families with more than one student may be seeing two different versions.

Biology Is Moving to Junior Year

Bend-La Pine restructured its science sequence. Beginning in fall 2025, all freshmen take NGSS Physics, followed by NGSS Chemistry in tenth grade. Starting in fall 2028, juniors will choose between NGSS Biology and advanced options including AP Biology and IB Biology.

For decades biology was the freshman course. Now it comes later, after students have physics and chemistry behind them.

The Transition Years Are Confusing

Because the change phases in over several years, families right now may have one student who took biology in ninth grade and another who won’t take it until eleventh. That’s not an error on anyone’s part. It’s a district mid-transition.

If you’re unsure where your student lands, ask their counselor directly rather than assuming their path matches an older sibling’s.

The Academic Diploma requires three science credits. The Honors Diploma requires four, and students headed toward health or science careers should plan on more than the minimum.

What Later Biology Changes

Taking biology as a junior has a real advantage. Modern biology is chemistry at small scale, and students who already understand bonding, energy, and molecular structure can reason about biological processes rather than memorizing them.

It also raises expectations. A junior-level course can assume more, move faster, and ask harder questions than a freshman course could.

Biology Has More Math Than Parents Expect

This surprises families constantly. NGSS emphasizes analyzing data and using mathematical thinking, and modern biology courses reflect that. Students encounter experimental design, statistical analysis, chi-square tests, standard error, and population genetics calculations.

Where Students Get Stuck in Biology

Memorizing Instead of Modeling

The root problem behind most biology struggles. Students build a mental filing cabinet of terms with no connections between them. It works on vocabulary quizzes and collapses on any question requiring prediction or explanation.

Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis

The two big metabolic pathways defeat more biology students than anything else. There are many steps, unfamiliar molecules, and easily confused locations. Students who memorize the sequence without understanding the purpose cannot answer questions about what happens when something is disrupted.

Biology asks students to think at molecular, cellular, tissue, organism, population, and ecosystem levels, sometimes within a single question. Shifting between scales fluently is a skill, and many students never develop it explicitly.

Students often learn evolution as a narrative rather than a mechanism. They can describe natural selection without being able to apply it to a novel scenario or interpret data about allele frequencies.

Draw It

Students diagram processes rather than describing them from memory. Drawing forces decisions about what connects to what and where things are located. Gaps that hide in verbal descriptions become obvious on paper.

Practice the Question Types

Biology Tutoring in Bend: Common Questions

My student memorizes everything and still does poorly on tests. Why?
