Wrong Interpretations Are Useful
Statistics has a well-known set of misconceptions that nearly every student passes through. The p-value gets read as the probability the null hypothesis is true. The confidence interval gets read as a 95 percent chance the parameter sits inside it. Both are wrong, and both are nearly universal.
We want students to say these things out loud early, because a misconception spoken can be corrected. A misconception held silently walks into the exam.
Struggle, Within Limits
We let students sit with difficulty before stepping in. Rescuing too early prevents the learning. Knowing how long to wait before frustration stops being productive is part of what a good tutor brings.

Local context matters here more than in any other subject, because Bend students get substantially more statistics than their parents did.
Statistics Is Core, Not Elective
Bend-La Pine follows a 2+1 math pathway built around Oregon’s 2021 standards. Across the two required core credits, the content breaks down to roughly one credit of algebra, half a credit of geometry, and half a credit of data science and statistics.
Read that last part again. Every student in the district now takes statistics as required core content. For most parents, statistics was an optional senior elective or something they first met in college.
Math 2 in particular pivots midyear from geometry into probability and data. Students who found their footing in proofs sometimes stumble when the material turns statistical, and the grade dip shows up in the second half of the course.
The Data Science Pathway
Statistics also anchors one of the three third-credit pathways. Students can choose Exploring Data Science or AP Statistics rather than the calculus route through Advanced Algebra and AP Pre-Calculus.
This is a real decision with real consequences. Students headed toward engineering, physics, or computer science generally need the calculus pathway. Students headed toward business, health sciences, psychology, or the social sciences are often better served by data science and statistics, which they will use far more than calculus.

Where Students Get Stuck in Statistics
The trouble spots are remarkably consistent, and most of them are conceptual rather than computational.
Sampling Distributions
The single hardest idea in an introductory statistics course. Students must distinguish the population distribution, the distribution of one sample, and the distribution of a statistic across many hypothetical samples.
Those three things get tangled, and once they’re tangled nothing downstream makes sense. Confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and standard error all rest on this one idea.
What a p-value Actually Says
Nearly every student initially reads a p-value as the probability that the null hypothesis is true. It isn’t. It’s the probability of seeing data at least this extreme if the null hypothesis were true.
The distinction sounds pedantic and it isn’t. Getting it wrong produces wrong conclusions on exams and, later, wrong conclusions in real work.
Confidence Intervals
The other universal misconception. Students say there’s a 95 percent chance the true value lies in their interval. The 95 percent describes the long-run behavior of the procedure, not the specific interval in front of them.
Backward Logic
Hypothesis testing works by assuming the thing you doubt, then checking whether the data would be surprising under that assumption. Students find this genuinely disorienting, because no previous math course asked them to reason by contradiction.
Choosing the Right Test
Even students who understand each individual procedure freeze when a problem doesn’t announce which one to use. Is this a proportion or a mean? One sample or two? Paired or independent? Making that call is a distinct skill that most courses never teach explicitly.
Checking Conditions
Every inference procedure carries assumptions about randomness, independence, and shape. Students skip this step because it feels like bureaucracy, then lose points for it consistently on AP free response questions.
Correlation, Causation, and Study Design
Students learn to recite that correlation doesn’t imply causation without being able to apply it. They can’t identify a confounding variable, don’t distinguish observational studies from experiments, and can’t explain why random assignment matters.
Type I and Type II Errors
Abstract, easily confused, and made harder by the fact that which error matters more depends entirely on context. Students memorize definitions without being able to reason about consequences in a specific scenario.
Writing Conclusions in Context
AP Statistics grading demands answers stated in the context of the problem, with specific required language. Many students understand the statistics and lose points purely on how they write the conclusion. This is a coachable skill and often the fastest score gain available.
Reading Software Output
College courses frequently require interpreting output from R, SPSS, Excel, or a graphing calculator. Students who understand the concepts get lost in the formatting and don’t know which number matters.

Every result gets translated into a sentence a non-statistician could understand. If a student can’t do that, they don’t understand the result yet. This also happens to be exactly what AP free response questions require.
Practice Test Selection Deliberately
We give students mixed problem sets where the procedure isn’t announced. Choosing correctly is a separate skill from executing correctly, and it needs its own practice.
Explain It Back
