Sophomore Year, Not Junior Year
Bend-La Pine restructured its science sequence. All freshmen now take NGSS Physics, followed by NGSS Chemistry in tenth grade. Starting in fall 2028, juniors will choose between NGSS Biology and advanced options including AP Biology and IB Biology.
For decades students reached chemistry as juniors, with more math behind them. Sophomores arrive with less.
The Academic Diploma requires three science credits. The Honors Diploma requires four, and students headed toward science or health careers should plan on more.
The Math Problem Nobody Mentions

Chemistry is relentlessly algebraic. Stoichiometry, molarity, gas laws, and dimensional analysis all demand fluent equation manipulation and proportional reasoning.

Stoichiometry
Multi-step conversion problems that require tracking units through several transformations. Students who are shaky on the mole cannot do stoichiometry, and students shaky on algebra cannot either. It’s where both weaknesses surface at once.
Dimensional Analysis
Chemistry demands that students carry units through every calculation and use them to check their work. Students who treat units as decoration produce answers off by factors of a thousand and never notice.
Balancing Equations
Conceptually simple, procedurally fussy. Students often approach it by trial and error rather than by systematic reasoning about conservation of atoms. It works on easy equations and falls apart on hard ones.
Molarity and Solutions
Concentration problems combine the mole concept with proportional reasoning. Students who can define molarity frequently cannot apply it to a dilution problem, which signals memorization rather than understanding.
Electron Configuration and Periodic Trends
Students memorize the filling order without understanding what it represents, then cannot explain why atomic radius decreases across a period. Periodic trends are one of the places where a solid mental model replaces enormous amounts of memorization.
Limiting Reactants
Requires holding two parallel calculations in mind and comparing them. Students who understand stoichiometry sometimes still stumble here because of the working-memory load.
pH and Logarithms
Acid-base chemistry introduces logarithms, which most sophomores have never used. The chemistry is often clear while the math is entirely unfamiliar, and students blame the wrong subject.
Thermochemistry
Sign conventions cause endless trouble. Whether energy is positive or negative depends on perspective, and students who haven’t built a clear picture of system versus surroundings guess.

My sophomore did fine in physics last year. Why is chemistry harder?
